Help your cat get used to the wheel
A seven-step programme to adapt to your cat’s pace: short sessions, rewards and no pressure.
A seven-step programme to adapt to your cat’s pace: short sessions, rewards and no pressure.
Let your cat discover the wheel gradually and reward their own initiative. The days shown organise the guide’s steps; they do not set a learning deadline. Repeat a step for as long as needed and let your cat walk away whenever they choose.
Days 1 and 2
Lock the wheel and simply let it live in the room. Your cat sniffs it, puts a paw on it, maybe even lies down on it: perfect. Place a few treats on the track and in the centre, then reward every approach with a stroke or a kind word. No performance targets — the only goal of these two days is for the wheel to become a familiar, pleasant object.
Days 3 and 4
The wheel stays locked. Now tempt your cat onto the track with a treat or a favourite toy, and let them hop back down as often as they like. The goal: climbing on and off with confidence. You will know they are relaxed when they play beside the wheel or settle down on it of their own accord — that is your cue to move on.
Day 5
Once your cat explores the track comfortably, unlock the wheel as instructed in the manual. Encourage a first step with a toy or reward, letting your cat start the wheel moving themselves. Keep your hands away from moving parts and end the session if your cat hesitates or wants to get off.
Day 6
Move a wand toy gently along the track to invite your cat to walk. Let them choose their pace without turning the wheel by hand. Reward a few voluntary steps, then offer a break. Keep the session short and relaxed.
Day 7
If your cat walks comfortably on the wheel, continue playing while letting them choose their pace. They may speed up, keep walking or stop: follow their preferences each time. Keep sessions short, reward their participation and let them get off freely.
Go back to days 1 and 2: wheel locked, no prompting at all. Move the treats slightly away from the wheel, then closer day by day, until they sit on the track. Some cats watch the wheel for several days before their first contact — that is simply how they get used to something new, so give them the time.
Your cat does not need to run to explore the wheel. Revisit earlier steps and offer a toy or reward to encourage a few steps, without turning the wheel by hand. If they prefer walking, resting or another game, respect their choice.
The guide supports gradual familiarisation at your cat’s pace. Repeat steps as needed, keep sessions short and let your cat walk away whenever it wants. Some cats prefer other activities.
